“Whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42
Water is essential to every human life. But what if you had none – how would you survive?
The tragic reality is, more than half the population of South Sudan does not have access to clean water. Years of wars and internal strife have destroyed the infrastructure of the country. There are no government assistance programs to help these impoverished people.
To survive, the people are forced to drink whatever water they can find – even contaminated water from polluted sources, often teeming with bacteria and animal feces.
Diseases like cholera, typhoid, and malaria spread through these tainted waters. It is the most vulnerable who suffer the brunt of this epidemic. These preventable diseases are the leading killers of children and babies in South Sudan.
Women and Girls Victimized
During the dry season of the year in South Sudan, the challenge is even worse. The land goes for months without seeing rainfall. This means women and girls are forced to trek even further than normal, sometimes for miles, just to find dirty water that they have to lug back to their families. This journey often involves crossing through dangerous areas where marauders wait to attack.
No girl should have to risk assault just for a simple drink of water. This is the reality in South Sudan, but it doesn’t have to be.

In developed nations, we turn on the faucet, jump in the shower, or reach for a bottle of sparkling water. Imagine if you had none of that. Imagine your only water source was a dirty hole filled with muddy water shared by animals.
